In fact, motivation is the driving force giving rise to corresponding behaviors, which in turn lead to specific outcomes; from this point of view, motivation is the "emotional fuel" propelling us towards the direction of our goals.
To boost our motivation, we should become more aware of our motives (the "why" of our actions), while overcoming the obstacles that hold us back from success (insecurities, fears, lack of focus, a need for immediate gratification etc.).
